Fox are now going it alone, after Sony conceded and allowed Spider-Man to join his fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe buddies. Luckily for Fox, they have been left with the very expansive X-Men universe, and with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE and DEADPOOL in the works, they don’t seem to be slowing down. It’s also easy to forget that Hugh Jackman, currently starring in CHAPPIE, is set to return in 2017 as Wolverine in the as yet untitled WOLVERINE 3. THE WOLVERINE was a great film in my opinion, although it could have been incredible. Unfortunately it was still brought down by a traditional and predictable pattern, rather than aiming for a more unique tone.
Still, it was a huge improvement over the film of which we do not speak of, but we must question where returning director James Mangold will take everybody’s favourite mutant after the convoluted events of X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. Will it just pick up from THE WOLVERINE, and will we finally see Wolverine in his trademark mask that was shown in a deleted scene? We’ll see in two years time, but will have information throughout next year after Mangold confirmed on Twitter that the film would start shooting “early next year,” from a script by David James Kelly.
Robert Downey Jr. will draw even with Jackman, after he plays Tony Stark/Iron Man for the 7th time in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, but WOLVERINE 3 will make it 8 for Jackman, assuming he doesn’t have a cameo in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE.
