Zombies. They are everywhere. We can’t escape them no matter how we may try. New documentary DOC OF THE DEAD explores every facet of the current zombie mania that has hit the world.
It charts the rise of the zombie from it’s humble beginnings in WHITE ZOMBIE through to it’s inclusive in the phenomenal hit that is The Walking Dead, stopping off at George A. Romero’s trilogy of course. Other movies that have shaped the zombie landscape such as RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, SHAUN OF THE DEAD and WORLD WAR Z also get put under the spotlight. The talking heads include Mr Romero, along with Robert Kirkman, the writer behind the Walking Dead graphic novels – who has a strange outlook on his creation, author of World War Z Max Brooks, Bruce Campbell and a slew of other zombie experts.
DOC OF THE DEAD is crammed full of interesting tidbits and insights into the current cultural craze and also tries to uncover the origins of the monster within the real world. Experience a zombie wedding officiated by Bruce Campbell, go on a jaunt with the annual walk of the dead festival and find out just where you can get your zombie apocalypse target practice props from. There is also an attempt to find the source of the zombies within our own world, as well as addressing the big zombie debate – which are better, fast zombies or slow zombies?
Whilst full of fascinating interviews the downfall of DOC OF THE DEAD is the connecting links. These play for laughs but are a little too over the top and jar with the tone of the content.
The target audience for this documentary is obviously fans of all things undead; if they aren’t your thing I’d give DOC OF THE DEAD a wide berth. Obviously not a hard-hitting expose-style doc given it’s subject matter, it is nonetheless a fascinating insight into what was once a very niche fandom.
[usr=3] DOC OF THE DEAD is available to buy from Monday 30th March.
