Everybody loves a gripping crime saga – a GONE GIRL style thriller with twists and turns you don’t see coming. But when that murderous mystery is actually true, ongoing, and with notable society members as characters scrutinised by an interested national and international media contingent, the story quickly becomes a spine-chilling, sit on the edge of your front row seat film you won’t want to miss.
Academy Award winning documentarian Jean-Xavier de Lestrade’s (UN COUPABLE IDÉAL) engrossing courtroom thriller THE STAIRCASE is exactly the ‘what now?’ kind of docuseries you might find fascinating. The first part of the ten-part series debuted this week on VOD and can be watched at SundanceNow Doc Club for free. The program includes the original Peabody Award winning eight-part series as well as de Lestrade’s two-episode follow-up films THE STAIRCASE: LAST CHANCE and UN COUPABLE IDÉAL (Murder On A Sunday Morning).
The series takes a revealing look into the high-profile murder case of newspaper columnist, novelist and Vietnam War veteran Michael ‘Mike’ Peterson who was charged with the murder of his second wife, Kathleen Peterson, whose body was discovered lying in a pool of blood on the stairway of their North Carolina home on December 9, 2001. With Intimate access to Peterson’s home, family, and lawyers, the series chronicles the familial and judicial twists of the case from prosecution to conviction, appeal and pending retrial.
