With Gareth Edwards’ Hollywood take on GODZILLA on hiatus until he finishes his stand alone Star Wars project ROGUE ONE, Toho have got the ball rolling on their 29th instalment of the franchise. It’s been 12 years since Toho gave us the action-packed and monster-filled GODZILLA: FINAL WARS, and realising that now is the time to re-establish themselves as the monster giants they are, they have just announced two very talented individuals helming the return of GODZILLA.
Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi will direct the project, with Higuchi focusing on the special effects sequences and Anno on the screenplay. Both are no strangers to giant based action, with Anno being the creator of Evangelion and Higuchi having served on previous Godzilla films, as well as the incredible trilogy of Gamera films from the 1990s. Higuchi is also behind the upcoming live-action adaptation of ATTACK ON TITAN, which will be released in two parts in Japan this August and September. Toho had the following words to say on the return of Godzilla:
Ever since Hollywood announced that Godzilla was to be resurrected, the expectation for another Japanese Godzilla grew. And if we were to newly produce, we looked into Japanese creators who were the most knowledgeable and who had the most passion for Godzilla.
This is a fantastic duo to bring the greatest monster in the world back to the big screen, and as a massive Godzilla fan I am so happy we do not have to wait 3 more years to see him on screen again. The prospect of two intertwining Godzilla series is also more exciting than I could possibly imagine.
So for you big monster fans, that’s 2 upcoming GODZILLA films, 2 ATTACK ON TITAN films, PACIFIC RIM 2, and King Kong origin story KONG: SKULL ISLAND, all within the next 3 years. It’s a good life.
