With teasers and trailers having dropped for this summer’s ANT-MAN, this Christmas’ STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, and next summer’s BATMAN V SUPERMAN; DAWN OF JUSTICE, Fox have decided to get in the ring with a full trailer for their big reboot, FANTASTIC FOUR. The film, which stars Miles Teller as Mr. Fantastic, is once again providing an origin story, but this time it is much more serious than what we were given in 2005.
Director of CHORNICLE, Josh Trank, takes the helm in an effort to keep the rights at Fox while also improving on the box office take of FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER. I actually enjoyed the last two movies, with them offering a bright and campier film for younger audiences. It was a nice respite from the gloominess of Nolan’s Batman films, Spider-Man’s angst, and X-Men’s social commentary. However, this was in the days before Marvel had begun their domination of the genre, so changes obviously had to be made.
With two trailers out now, I can say I’m not that impressed. It looks as though Fox are trying too hard to get that darker tone, while revisiting the origin story is a little by the numbers. However, it was nice to see a bit more humour than the first trailer offered. It certainly doesn’t have any of the exciting moments that other upcoming blockbusters have given us, so perhaps Fox need to hurry up with their FANTASTIC FOUR/X-MEN crossover. Otherwise, they could see Marvel’s First Family going the way of SPIDER-MAN, and rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
FANTASTIC FOUR is released on 6th August in the UK and on the 7th in the US, It stars Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Bell, and Toby Kebbell.
