Chris Columbus Says New ‘Gremlins’ Isn’t A Reboot

Chris Columbus has been out and about on the promotional trail at CinemaCon in Las Vegas where he has been promoting his upcoming Adam Sandler comedy PIXELS. During the convention for cinema owners which takes place every April, Columbus talked up news on the planned GREMLINS movie which is about to be be reimagined for a new generation.

News has been light on the ground as late, and we’re still very much in the dark as to what the new movie’s story will revolved around, or what the new take will be. Columbus, who wrote the original movie, which was released in 1984, knows, and it seems it’s not what we first expected.

“I know what the take is, I can’t talk about it, but I was approached to do the sequel to Gremlins way back when.” Columbus said to MTV.

“That was before the power of the franchise. I was like, ‘Nah, the first movie exists, it’s great the way it is. Why spoil it with a sequel, or a bunch of sequels?'”

So why a new movie?

“Well, time has passed, and I’ve seen what happens when sequels can actually work… So I was open to the idea, and I think we have a really good take.” He added.

“It’s a completely different direction… it’s not a remake of the first movie at all … It’s the same universe, the same rules, same Gremlins, but not the same.”

So, defintely not a reboot or remake then, but a full on sequel? Whatever it will be, Joe Dante, the original movie’s director will definitely not be involved in the new picture, according to sources, but Steven Spielberg is expected to come back to executive produce through his Amblin Entertainment banner. Columbus also confirmed in the same interview that a new writer was attached for the planned sequel.

More news as we get it.
