The CW is doing a wonderful job with various DC Comic properties; both Arrow and The Flash have been great rating winners for the television station. News broke a couple of months ago that a spin-off from both shows was in the works.
In the beginning information was thin on the ground, the only real detail being that it would feature several guest actors from the already established shows. Top of the list were The Flash‘s Dr Martin Stein (Victor Garber) AKA Firestorm, villains Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) and Heat Wave (Dominc Purcell), along with Arrow‘s Ray Palmer AKA Atom (Brandon Routh), and Sara Lance AKA Black Canary (Caity Lotz). There was also the tease of two brand-new-to-screen characters. Viewers of Arrow were particularly surprised by the inclusion of the Black Canary as Lotz’s incarnation of the character has moved on.
The first trailer addresses her addition and it involves some magic water, water that those up to date with this season’s Arrow will know all about. The trailer also reveals the brand new members of a team who are part-Avengers, part-Suicide-Squad, thanks to the mixing of heroes and villains. Who are these new recruits? Check out the trailer now:
So Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) and Hawkgirl (Ciara Renee) are joining the team. Hunter’s inclusion means that the show will go on a jaunt through time, easily explaining their disappearance from the shows that they currently inhabit.
But where does DC’s Legends of Tomorrow fit into the CW DC universe? Well Arrow is the dark, bleak and gritty show, grounded in some sense of reality, whereas The Flash features out of this world meta-humans all of whom have special powers. The sister, or should that be brother, show appears a lot lighter with more moments of humour. From what we’ve glimpsed of the new show it seems that DC’s Legends of Tomorrowis going to feature all-out over-the-top action crammed full of cheesy one liners. I guess we’ll find out for sure when the show hits the airwaves in January 2016.
