Brad Bird’s Disney adventure Tomorrowland has opened at the number one spot at the US box-office with a rather lacklustre $32.2 debut. The film, which sees Hollywood megastar George Clooney leading the cast, was expected to take a slightly better $40 million over the three days, but fell short going up against summer blockbusters like George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road, the musical/ comedy heavyweight Pitch Perfect 2, and the lurking Marvel megabeast Avengers: Age Of Ultron.
Tomorrowland, titled Tomorrowland: A World Beyond in the UK, cost a whopping $190 million to make, and it will need a lot of traction to get it anywhere near profit, and sources say that overseas performance is also coming in very weak at a reported $26.7 million over the past three days.
This weekend, Pitch Perfect 2, which stars Anna Kendrick, Elizabeth Banks (who also directs) and Rebel Wilson, tipped over the $100 million mark adding another $30 million to its tally. The Universal-backed comedy has now taken an impressive $117.7 million in hard dollars since its release a little over ten days ago.
Mad Max: Fury Road tipped in at number three on the chart this week. The George Miller action film, which has gained strong word-of-mouth and has had a sequel greenlit over the past seven days, made another $23 million since Friday, taking its total haul to $87.3m domestically.
The other big release this week was the horror remake Poltergeist, a mid-budgeted, though average-rated movie starring Sam Rockwell that secured a pretty strong $23 million on its three day opening weekend. The film looks to get back its $35 million budget by week 2.
Rounding out the top five is Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron, which now has a domestic haul standing at $404 million. The film made $20.8m since Friday.
All of these films go up against the Dwayne Johnson disaster/ actioner San Andreas, which opens globally from Friday. Check back next week to see how it fared in this sea of money-hungry blockbusters.
