First look at the ‘Bend It By Beckham’ musical, now previewing in London

We strive to cover as many theatre productions as physically possible here at THN, and love it when one comes our way that ties into film at the same time. Sure we’ve had some duds over the years, but there are also the gems that come our way too (we’re thinking Dirty Dancing, Billy Elliot and the brilliant Once to name a few).

Now in previews but officially opening in a couple of weeks is the stage version of Gurinder Chadha’s rather brilliant Bend It Like Beckham, which is probably most famous as being Keira Knightley’s break-out movie.

The production officially opens at the end of June, and we hope to bring you a full review in the weeks leading up to the big opening night on the 24th, but for now here’s a very special, first-look at the cast in the musical.

Natalie Dew plays football crazy Jess with Lauren Samuels as Jules, a player with the Harriers, a local women’s football team, and Jamie Campbell Bower as their coach Joe.  Sophie-Louise Dann plays the role of Paula with Jamal Andréas as Jess’ good friend Tony.  Preeya Kalidas plays Pinky, Jess’ sister, with Tony Jayawardena and Natasha Jayetileke as her parents, Mr and Mrs Bhamra.

But as her sister’s traditional Indian wedding approaches, can she keep her family happy and still follow her dreams?   Bend It Like Beckham is a joyous new British musical about where we are now.
