Tilda Swinton to join Benedict Cumberbatch in Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange?’

The Brits are taking over Marvel. As we all know, Benedict Cumberbatch is to play the title character in Marvel’s Phase 3 film Doctor Strange, but now it looks like he’s being joined by one of Blighty’s other highly-respected thespians. Tilda Swinton, who appeared the in the brilliant, but bloody dark We Need To Talk About Kevin and the fantastic vampire movie Only Lovers Left Alive, alongside fellow Marvel alumni Tom Hiddleston, is in talks to play the role of The Ancient One in the Scott Derrickson directed adventure.

The film, expected in cinemas in 2017 (November 4th), revolves around a mysterious surgeon who, after injuring his hands, discovers the power of magic.

Doctor Strange is expected to start filming in the UK very soon, so expect the ‘talks’ to be concluded relatively quickly. The role of The Ancient One, the 500-year old mentor of Doctor Strange, has historically been male throughout his comic book history, so Swinton’s casting is an interesting choice. Indeed the likes of Morgan Freeman, Bill Nighy and Ken Watanabe have all been in talks for the role in the recent past, though none of them went further than that.

Doctor Strange will bridge the gap between the Captain America: Civil War, a new Spider-Man movie and the next Avengers film, which is due the following year.
