Distribution rights for 007 following Spectre, the 24th James Bond movie, could shift to a different studio later this year, according to a report over at Variety.

The deal that Sony Pictures have with MGM have and the producers (Eon) of perhaps the greatest film franchise in history, ends after a hughely successful run of action adventures that have included Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and the most profitable movie in Bond history, Skyfall. The word on the street, well, at the trade paper anyway, is that potentially because of a close friendship between MGM chief Gary Barber and Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara, we could see Daniel Craig and co. head over to the WB. The trade reminds us of the big deal that MGM had with WB with The Hobbit series and the upcoming Rocky spin-off Creed.

Whatever happens, we’re sure that there will be a huge bidding war for the next series of films in the series, the next of which could be Craig’s last bow as the British secret agent.

Skyfall grossed over $1 billion worldwide ($1.18 billion to be exact) upon its release in 2012, and we’re expecting Spectre, which also stars Lea Seydoux, Dave Bautista, Ralph Fiennes, Ben Whishaw and Christoph Waltz, to do the same (at least) when it debuts in October/ November (US). Sam Mendes directs.
