Synopsis: Max (Yelchin) and Evelyn (Greene) have the perfect relationship until they move in together. Once cohabiting, Max realises that Evelyn is far more high maintenance than he thought. Before he can break up wit her though, she is tragically killed. Weeks later, as Max is starting to move on with new flame Olivia (Daddario), Evelyn is resurrected and wants her man back for good.
Joe Dante has had an impressive career. The man behind the camera on classics such as Innerspace and Gremlins, Dante has been quiet for the last few years. His last film venture was the fantastic children’s horror The Hole which was scary enough to give grown-ups nightmares. Now comes Burying the Ex a black romantic comedy featuring that ever popular monster, the zombie.
Joe Dante has always had great flair for comedy, especially in the tongue-in-cheek black comedy vein, and Burying the Ex is no exception. Peppered with knowing nods to all the classic horror movies, genre fans will love spotting all the references. Fans of Dante should also keep their eyes peeled for a cameo from a Gremlins institution.
Ashley Greene of Twilight fame manages to completely shake off her good girl persona, clearly delighting in giving audiences a different side of herself. Evelyn is intolerable, high maintenance to the extreme, and yet there will be those in the audience who will find that character very familiar. Daddario’s Olivia is the polar opposite to Evelyn and clearly better suited to our leading man Max. Just why these two women fall madly in love with Max is a little unclear however, as although he has big dreams, he seems rather content to just coast through life.
The world of Burying the Ex is kitsch and cool, I guarantee you’ll be in the mood for a monster movie themed milkshake as you leave the auditorium.
Burying the Ex is a rom-zom-com for the horror fanatics of the world and is easily Dante’s best comedy since Gremlins and Innerspace. A delightfully dark, comedic, romantic monster movie.
