The Equalizer 2
It has been announced this morning that the sequel to last year’s brutal, though brilliant actioner The Equalizer, will be released in the fourth quarter of 2017. 29th September, 2017 to be exact.
Denzel Washington will return to the lead role of Robert McCall, and The Equalizer 2 will be the first sequel in his glittering career. Richard Wenk, who wrote the first movie, and also the hits 16 Blocks and The Expendables 2, will pen the screenplay for The Equalizer 2.
The official release date for The Equalizer 2 was announced by Exhibitor Relations on Twitter late last night.
The Equalizer was based on the classic, gritty 1980s TV show of the same name starring the late, great Edward Woodward. Antoine Fuqua‘s 2014 retelling was just as gritty, brilliantly violent (in all of the right places), and most of all showed off a fantastic performance from Washington. The film grossed over $190 million around the world late last year theatrically, which is nearly four-times its budget. A sequel was inevitable and The Equalizer 2 was greenlit before the first movie even hit theatres. Sony were super confident, and 100% right in being so.
We reviewed the movie very favourably and will be looking forward to the next adventure for McCall, and as to whom will feel the brunt of his vigilantism in The Equalizer 2.
There’s no word as to whether Fuqua will return for the new movie – he’s currently promoting the Jake Gyllenhaal boxing movie Southpaw, before getting to work on a Magnificent Seven remake – so his involvement in a director’s capacity is doubtful, particularly if Sony are locked to that September 2017 release date.
