Universal break records for biggest annual box-office takings

Universal 100th

Universal have set a new record for taking the most money at the box-office in a year for a single studio, ever. And it is still only August. With five months to go, the Hollywood studio has taken $5.53 billion in cinemas around the world, beating the previous record-holder 20th Century Fox, who took $5.52 billion in 2014.

Breaking it down, of the $5.53 billion, $3.59 billion was made internationally.

The success is down to massive blockbusters like Jurassic World, which became the third highest grossing film of all time this year, and set a record for taking $1 billion worldwide in only 13 days. Add onto that the huge success of Fast & Furious 7 and the recent Minions, plus smaller movies like Pitch Perfect 2, which took $180 million domestically alone ($282 million globally), and Fifty Shades of Grey (£569m globally), and you’ve got a huge year for the studio – and deservedly so. Universal currently has a 28% market share compared to Disney’s 20% in second place (don’t forget they’ve got a huge film releasing towards the end of the year that has the potential to blow the competition away).

Jurassic World Review

Universal still have quite a few releases coming in the remainder of the year, including the epic Everest, this moth’s biopic Straight Outta Compton, horror sequel Sinister, Kray’s gangster film Legend, and Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs, plus many more.

They’re not quite done yet.
