Maze Runner 3 to be set one year on from Scorch Trials
In just over a week, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials hits cinemas. The film is the second movie in the Maze Runner series that kicked off last year, and we’ve just received news that a third movie is confirmed, and it looks like the filmmakers are approaching the film in a slightly different way. It seems that Maze Runner: The Death Cure will skip forward a year, which is totally different to the source material.
Director Wes Ball has been out and about Stateside doing some press for the second movie in the series, and he spoke Collider about the approach they’re taking with the next installment.
“This next one will be cool because we’re gonna cut maybe a year later. Yeah, so it’ll be cool. Some things have happened off-screen, which is gonna make the movie feel even bigger.” He told the site.
‘Death Cure’ already has a release set for February 17th, 2017 with shooting expected to start in the new year. It will be based on the novel, like the rest of the series, by James Dashner, but it sounds like some of the events in the book may happen off-screen. The Death Cure is the final book in the series, and it’s surprising that the filmmakers have chosen to go the route of cutting some stuff out, and not dividing the final film into two; a bit like The Hunger Games: Mockingjay etc.
Ball elaborates on the process in planning the third film.
“We’re working on the third one right now, working to make it even better and even cooler, and doing the same thing we did on this last one where it’s a different movie. It’s gonna be a different kind of an engine, a different kind of genre almost and a different sort of color palette and terrain. It’s gonna be cool. It’s gonna be very, very cool I think.”
