The short list for the female lead in the Rian Johnson-directed Star Wars Episode VIII is down to just three. The movie will start shooting in 2016 for a May 26, 2017 release.

Jane The Virgin‘s Gina Rodriguez, Orphan Black‘s Tatiana Maslany, and Bates Motel‘s Olivia Cooke are the three in the frame for the unnamed lead in Johnson’s movie, the eighth official film in the Star Wars saga, following on from J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which releases this December 18th.

The plan is for the three to “chemistry-read” with “The Force Awakens” star John Boyega, who will return for ‘Episode VIII,’ before the end of the month, so reports TheWrap.

It’s not known as to what part this could be, but we are hearing that Han Solo’s daughter is a possibility.

Here’s a look at the three actresses.

Cooke appears in this week’s UK release, Me and Earl and The Dying Girl, where she is, quite frankly, excellent. Rodriguez delighted in the superb Filly Brown from a few years back, and Maslany was pretty great as a younger Helen Mirren in this year’s Woman In Black.

Benicio Del Toro is being courted for the lead villain role in Episode VIII, and is said to be in final negotiations for the high-profile part.

Following the first Star Wars sequel in December is Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which is due in December next year. The film is currently shooting at Pinewood in the UK.

Really can’t wait for these movies, so much so we’re even starting to play Star Wars games to keep our mind occupied until they arrive.

We’ll bring you more news as we get it.
