Pacific Rim 2 is on permanent hold

Pacific Rim 2

The planned sequel to Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim is on permanent hold, according to The Hollywood Reporter. As we understand it, the film was already in pre-production for a 2017, but now it looks like Universal have pulled out of the project, leaving Legendary high and dry.

The trade reports:

“…the project — which had been ramping up to make a release date in August 2017 — has been halted indefinitely and will be pushed back (if it gets made at all).”

The original film was not a massive success in domestic territories, but it was a huge hit over in China, and the movie eventually grossed over $400 million at the box-office. However, with its rumoured production budget standing at a rumoured $190 million, it would be a huge gamble to roll the dice on a sequel.

At the moment, it has just been ‘pushed-back,’ so there’s a little hope of it moving forward sometime in the future. We’ll keep you posted.
