Will Smith Talks About His Character’s Fate In ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’

With 2016 now upon us, many keen, enthusiastic moviegoers across the globe have began to steadily increase their excitement for the incredible year of releases we have ahead of us. However, in age of unlimited blockbusters and CGI-saturated tentpoles, one thing that viewers are not crying out for is more alien invasion films.

Despite the fact that audiences have been subject to an abundance of alien-themed productions over the past few years, 20th Century Fox is still attempting to cash in on their success through this summer’s Independence Day 2 (aka Independence Day: Resurgence). The belated sequel to the (now twenty year old) 90’s smash hit will try to capitalize on the nostalgia and widespread guilty pleasure viewers feel for the original film.

However, the sequel will have the difficult task of achieving this without the help of its previous leading man, Will Smith. Of course, the first Independence Day helped launch the Hollywood career of Smith post-Bel-Air which catapulted him into international stardom.

Regardless of Smith’s expensive price tag preventing an appearance from Captain Steve Hiller and his outrageously cool one-liners, there is still a huge amount of curiosity and anticipation for the film. Now, Smith has opened up about the revelation that his character had died in between the two films. Check it out below:

‘I was working on Suicide Squad during that time. Roland [Emmerich] and I had talked about it. The trailer looks really cool. I’m going to be sitting around with tears in my eyes when that one comes out… It was terrible when I found out my character died.’

So there we have it. Clearly Smith still holds a special place in his heart for the role that kickstarted his movie career. Unfortunately however, it just wasn’t enough to lure him back for another close encounter. Although, with the excitement currently surrounding Suicide Squad it was a probably a good decision on Smith’s part to opt for DC’s villain-themed comic adaptation instead.

Besides, when was the last time we saw Jeff Goldblum headline a Summer blockbuster? Surely this is something that the world has been missing far more than another Will Smith action vehicle.

Independence Day: Resurgence stars Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Sela Ward, Brent Spiner, William Fichtner and Maika Monroe.

The film will be released 24th June in the UK.
