True Detective Season 2 – Clip & Blu-ray Review

B0182N0LD2.PT01Created by: Nic Pizzolatto

Starring: Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams Vince Vaughn, Taylor Kitsch

Synopsis: A bizarre murder brings together three police officers and a career criminal in the corrupt city of Vinci, California.

Rather than all the hype and instantaneous reaction, it’s much easier to say that following any first season of any superbly written drama with the addition of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson is going to have to be something special. But True Detective creator and writer Nic Pizzolatto took a brave step by making a whole new world for his murky, crime-ridden plans with new characters and so although bringing Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch together seemed intriguing, would it work? Well, the jury is still in-between as a whole but stepping away from the machine and diving in with less over-excitement is sometimes a good place to start.

Season 2 stars Farrell as Ray Velcoro, a troubled detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him. Vaughn portrays Frank Semyon, a criminal and entrepreneur in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner. McAdams plays Ani Bezzerides, a sheriff’s detective whose uncompromising ethics put her at odds with others and the system she serves. Kitsch portrays Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and a highway patrol motorcycle officer, running from a difficult past and the sudden glare of a scandal that never happened.

Although this second outing for Pizzolatto may not hold the sheer unique brilliance of the first, it’s also been made clear – since the release – that HBO had a little too much influence on the final outcome which, for them, is actually unusual but we’d say give it a shot if you’re not sure and you loved the first one. It’s a beautifully murky world, Farrell is particularly special and hype is generally a self-created rabid animal.
