Starring Jessica Chastain and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Mama told the tale of two young sisters whom, after surviving alone in the woods for several years, are taken in by their uncle and his girlfriend. Once re-homed things take a turn for the worse as an evil spirit known as ‘mama’ has claimed the girls as her own and isn’t prepared to share. The film was directed by Andres Muschetti and produced by visionary Guillermo del Toro, and took an impressive amount at the box-office.
With that in mind it should come as no surprise that a sequel is on the way. Scott Bernstein and Russell Ackerman will produce the project and it seems they are circling a directing duo in the form of Starry Eyes directors Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kölsch.
Starry Eyes was a fantastic feature debut and shone a light on the darker aspects of the Hollywood dream, as young and ambitious actress Sarah, desperate to succeed, became embroiled with shady film organisation Astraeus. For us the film was one of the stand-out horrors of the last few years and if you haven’t seen it yet you really should take the time to track it down.
The pair’s work will next be seen in horror anthology Holidays as they not only directed the Valentine’s Day section, but wrote the New Year’s Eve segment for Some Kind of Hate director Adam Egypt Mortimer. They are also due to write and direct a new Exorcist film, Exorcism Diaries.
