‘Brooklyn’ spin-off TV series reportedly in the works

Brooklyn TV series in the offing: The BAFTA and Oscar nominated film may make the transition from the big screen to the small screen.

Brooklyn TV series

A Brooklyn TV series is reportedly in the works. The film, an Oscar contender this year for Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for Saioirse Ronan and Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay for Nick Hornby, is set to head to the small screen for a sin-off, according to Screen Daily. The film was based on Colm Toibin’s novel of the same name, and directed by John Crowley, the celebrated director of Intermission and Is Anybody There?

The film sees Ronan star as Eilis, a young woman who moves from small town Ireland to Brooklyn, where she has the opportunity for work, for a future – and love, in the form of Italian-American, Tony (Emory Cohen; The GamblerThe Place Beyond The Pines). When a family tragedy forces her to return to Ireland, she finds herself drawn back into the life she left behind. As a secret threatens to reveal itself, Eilis has to confront a terrible dilemma – a heart-breaking choice between two men and two countries.

The Brooklyn TV series probably won’t feature Ronan, but Julie Walters, who plays Mrs Keogh in the film, may reprise her role in the spin-off.

Speaking to Screen Daily, producer Finola Dwyer said: “I suggested the idea to Colm quite early on, before there was even a first draft for the film.”

“We’re talking to writers now and have a couple in our sights,” she added.

Brooklyn which we reviewed at last Year’s London Film Festival, has made a decent $8 million in the UK and Ireland, and over $30 million in the United States; numbers that should increase following its Oscar push over the coming weeks.

The film arrives on Blu-ray, DVD and EST from February 29th, from Lionsgate Home Entertainment.
