‘Hannibal’ showrunner takes on ‘Star Trek’

Bryan Fuller

He rebooted cinematic cannibal Hannibal Lecter for the small screen, a journey that came to an abrupt end after three seasons. But showrunner for hire Bryan Fuller has stopped licking his wounds now he’s landed a new high profile job… and this time the longevity of the voyage is assured!

It’s been announced he’ll be overseeing the new Star Trek – that’s the TV version as opposed to movie instalment Star Trek: Beyond – alongside executive producer Alex Kurtzman. Details have yet to be revealed about where the show will be set in the vast Trek chronology, but Fuller has given fans a retro chuckle via a deeply geeky blurt-out via Twitter:

Reflecting the idea of a franchise headed to the future, it’ll be shown on CBS’ on-demand service All Access, a far cry from the grainy Desilu days of Captain Kirk and the original run. Fuller cut his teeth writing for the Deep Space Nine and Voyager chapters of the legacy. He also brought us whimsical fantasy Pushing Daisies and is currently in charge of Neil Gaiman adaptation American Gods for Starz.

Add to that CV the spectacularly macabre world of Hannibal and you have an intriguing choice to sign up for Federation duties. Set phasers to, erm, wait.
