He impressed us massively with the superb The Witch, which arrives on UK shores in just a couple of weeks, and now it looks like writer and director Robert Eggers is heading to television for his next project, a 6-8 part TV mini-series based on the Russian Tsar Grigori Rasputin.

Eggers will write and direct the series, which will cover the ‘mad monk’s’ origins in Siberia to his rise to power and eventual demise.

Rasputin was a Russian peasant, mystical faith healer and a trusted friend to the family of Nicholas II, the last Tsar of Russia. He became an influential figure in Saint Petersburg, especially after August 1915 when Nicholas took command of the army at the front.

There have been many attempts to bring Rasputin’s story to the screen, the highest profile being Leonardo DiCaprio’s long-mooted attempt, which is still on the cards, though we’ve not heard anything of note since 2013.

Eggers also has his Nosferatu movie still on the cards, but expect this one to go first.

The Witch is released in UK cinemas on March 11.
