Watch: ‘El Clásico’ trailer attests that nothing is more powerful than love and football

As Real Madrid fans celebrate Ronaldo’s 85th minute winner and El Clásico glory this evening, we wanted to share another story of determined perseverance following a more personally given red card.

Director Halkawt Mustafa’s film El Clásico is a wild journey of love, football and big dreams in modern day Iraq, seen through the eyes of a man whose only outward flaw is his short stature.

Passionately in love with his childhood friend Gona (Rozhin Sharifi), Alan (Wrya Ahmed) has been saving money from his café business so as to build her her dream house and be a worthy husband in the eyes of Gona’s Real Madrid loving father Jalal (Kamaran Raoof).

Using Jalal’s passion for football as a tactic, Alan’s permission is subsequently rejected, the discrimination of short people in the region outweighing his overall worthiness as a husband.  Determined to prove that even small people can achieve big dreams, Alan devises an ambitious plan that will take him, his Barca loving brother Shirwan (Dana Ahmed) and a special pair of Klash, on a wild ATV adventure through bomb ravished Iraq to Madrid.

We can’t wait to share our review of the film when it screens at Tribeca next month but in the interim, you can check out the trailer and poster art for this wonderful story below.

For those of you who live in New York or heading into town mid April, you can catch a screening of El Clásico at Bow Tie Cinemas, Chelsea on Saturday 16 or Sunday 17 April at 6:45 pm and at the Regal Cinemas, Battery Park on Wednesday 20 April at 4:15pm or Saturday 23 April at 9:15pm.
