The Cillian Murphy in Dunkirk news comes via The Wrap who report that Murphy, who has also worked with Nolan on Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, will re-team with the British director for the World War II film, based around the famous battle of Dunkirk. Murphy will join fellow actors Tom Hardy (who is also a frequent flyer with Nolan), Bridge Of Spies Oscar-winner Mark Rylance and Kenneth Branagh.
The film will focus on the evacuation of Dunkirk during the British military operation that saved 330,000 lives as Allied soldiers were surrounded by German forces. Fionn Whitehead, Jack Lowden, Aneurin Barnard, and One Direction star Harry Styles are also bound for the Warner Bros. movie, which will start shooting very soon. No news as to whether Michael Caine, who has appeared in all of Nolan’s movies from the last ten years or so, will appear. We’re guessing he will, even if its the smallest of small parts.
Here’s a little more about the famous battle of Dunkirk.
The advancing German Army trapped the British and French armies on the beaches around Dunkirk. 330,000 men were trapped here and they were a sitting target for the Germans. Admiral Ramsey, based in Dover, formulated Operation Dynamo to get off of the beaches as many men as was possible. The British troops, led by Lord John Gort, were professional soldiers from the British Expeditionary Force; trained men that we could not afford to lose. From May 26th 1940, small ships transferred soldiers to larger ones which then brought them back to a port in southern Britain.
Interstellar cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema will shoot the film in IMAX 65mm. The film is set for release on July 21st, 2017.
