A Mary Poppins sequel is now officially on the cards after Walt Disney Pictures have set a release date. The film will be released in U.S. cinemas on Christmas Day 2018, with Emily Blunt in the lead role, taking over from Julie Andrews, who immortalised the P.L. Travers character in the classic movie from the 1960s.
Also joining the cast of the Rob Marshall directed movie is Lin-Manual Miranda (Hamilton), who is earmarked for an unnamed role. Shooting is expected to begin on Mary Poppins 2, or whatever they decide to call it (we’re hearing Mary Poppins Returns as one option), next year.
David Magee wrote the screenplay, adapted from Travers’ many book sequels to Mary Poppins, and the film will feature new songs from Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
