Independence Day sequel Independence Day: Resurgence opens on June 23rd
In just a few weeks time Independence Day: Resurgence will hit cinemas, pretty much 20 years to the day after the first film debuted in 1996. Over the years there have been some hefty rumours of a sequel to Roland Emmerich‘s summer blockbusters, all of which didn’t come to fruition.
In a recent interview with Empire magazine in the UK, Emmerich spoke about a sequel which nearly happened, one that would have been released after the terrible events of 9/11 back in 2001.
Here’s what he had to say to the mag.
“It was after 9/11 and Dean [Devlin, producer] and I wanted to make the movie about peace, and it just didn’t work,” the German filmmaker said. “There’s still an element of that in the new one, but that version was only about that. We shoot aliens down accidentally and then at the end of the movie they land on the White House lawn and say “we come in peace” and that was it. It was just too weak an idea and we didn’t really want to do it. It didn’t have an Independence Day feel. Only the alien ship was destroyed!”
The original Independence Day was released in the summer of 1996.
Well, judging by the trailers and featurettes that we’ve already seen for Independence Day sequel, we’re in for some pretty intense stuff, and it already looks like things may be being set up for more sequels in the future. Emmerich was asked if there were any plans for more movies, to which he replied “if it’s successful enough, yes, because it’s set up for a sequel.”
The Independence Day sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence, will blast in to UK cinemas on June 23rd, and U.S. cinemas a little later on July 24th. We’ll bring you a full review as soon as possible.
