‘Sicario’ sequel will stand up on its own – and more movies may follow

Sicario-2-sequel

Director Stefano Sollima is in town to promote his new crime movie Suburra, which comes out in UK cinemas on June 24th, but everyone really wants to know more about his net project, the sequel to Sicario, Soldado.

Speaking with The Independent, the Italian filmmaker spoke of the planned sequel, which sounds like it’ll be a film that will work on its own.

“It’s not a real sequel,” he said to the online newspaper. “It’s absolutely a standalone movie – a completely different story with just two of the characters that you met in Sicario.”

He refers to Benicio del Toro‘s hitman Alejandro Gillick and CIA officer Matt Graves (Josh Brolin).

“The reason that I love [Soldado] is because it’s not exactly a sequel; it’s something you can catch and enjoy even if you haven’t watched the first one.”

“The antagonists are now absolutely the main characters.”

Shooting on the film will start later in the year. Emily Blunt, who led the first movie, will not return for the sequel as she’s off to headline the Mary Poppins sequel, Mary Poppins Returns over at Disney.

Let’s not rule out a return in the future though, as Sollima stated that more movies in the Sicario series could follow.

“The idea is to make three anthology movies with some of the core actors and [set] in the same world.”

More as we get it.
