Producer Dean Devlin and director Roland Emmerich have an absolute monster hitting cinemas this week. 20 years after the original hit screens, Independence Day: Resurgence finally sees the light of day. Unfortunately, we haven’t seem the film as yet, but we’ll bring you a review towards the end of the week as it begins to roll into cinemas. Deviln has been doing the rounds to promote the movie, and along the way he stopped by at Variety and gave an update on another film on the duo’s radar, a reboot of their 1994 hit Stargate.

Stargate, which was produced by Devlin and directed by Roland Emmerich, was based on the idea of an alien Einstein–Rosen bridge device that enables nearly instantaneous travel across the cosmos.

Here’s what he had to say.

“At the time that we made it, every single studio in Hollywood had told me that science fiction was dead”, Devlin said, “and Roland and I really love science fiction, so I think that’s partly why it worked and resonated. It wasn’t a cynical attempt to try and make something that was crowd-pleasing”.

Devin and Emmerich’s plan was to originally make three movies in the Stargate series, but that obviously didn’t happen, so it looks like they are not only planning a complete reboot, but three new movies.

“It’s not a story that can take place 20 years later. So the only way to really tell that trilogy is to go back from the beginning and start the story all over again”, Devlin added. “It was taken away from us, and it’s tough to have your children raised by other parents, even if they do a very good job.”.

“For us, it’s not putting down what has been done. It’s to let us finish telling our story”.

He refers to the Stargate television series and direct-to-DVD films which were released over the years following the debut of their really rather good movie.

We’ll bring you more Stargate reboot news as it comes in.
