This is just devastating. HBO have completely u-turned on their season 2 plans for the Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger produced rock and roll TV series Vinyl and have cancelled it after its debut season.

The news comes via Deadline.

“After careful consideration, we have decided not to proceed with a second season of Vinyl,” HBO said in a statement. “Obviously, this was not an easy decision. We have enormous respect for the creative team and cast for their hard work and passion on this project.”

Scott Z. Burns was set to replace co-creator, executive producer and showrunner Terence Winter on the second season, but the trade blog adds that the transition between the two has nothing to do with the cancellation.

The show proved a tough sell to audiences as viewing figures were less than projected and hugely disappointing for the US cable network.

This is just awful news. The party is over.

Bobby Cannavale led the cast as Richie Finestra, a record label president who is trying to save his company and his soul without destroying everyone in his path. Also starring were Olivia Wilde, Ray Romano, Ato Essandoh, Max Casella, P.J. Byrne, J.C. MacKenzie, Birgitte Hjort Sørensen, Juno Temple, Jack Quaid, James Jagger and Paul Ben-Victor.

The show aired on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
