Little Mermaid live action film confirmed at Disney – Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda on board.
The Little Mermaid live action film has no release date, but has been added to the studio’s roster.
The dream team of Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda are to unite for Disney’s planned live-action version of The Little Mermaid. Miranda is the hotter than hot creator of Hamilton, the Broadway musical that has bagged 11 Tony awards, while Menken is the eight-time Oscar-winning composer who has multiple Disney titles to his name.
The two will collaborate on the live-action version of The Little Mermaid, the latest in a long slate of movies hitting the big screen adapted from the Mouse House’s much-loved animation back-catalogue. Deadline reports that the planned film will feature a mix of the classic songs from the original 1989 movie, as well as new material, Miranda will supervise the story.
Miranda is hot property at the moment. Apart from Hamilton he has a lead role in the forthcoming Mary Poppins Returns, also at Disney, which is due to hit at Christmas 2018. Miranda also worked on the animated fare Moana, which debuts later this year.
The Little Mermaid, released by Disney in 1989, was based on the Danish fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen. The story revolves around a young mermaid willing to give up her life in the sea and her identity as a mermaid to gain a human soul and the love of a human prince. The movie featured a number of catchy songs, including Under The Sea, Part Of Your World and Kiss The Girl and was adapted into a stage musical in 2007. The original movie was a huge success, taking in over $200 million from a $40 million budget.
No news on when The Little Mermaid live action film will hit, but we’ll keep you posted.
