Snowy zombies are the order of the day in zany horror comedy Attack of the Lederhosenzombies. Steve (Laurie Calvert), Branka (Gabriela Marcinková) and Josh (Oscar Dyekjaer Giese) are three snowboarders who find themselves stranded on a mountain during a zombie invasion. Steve is the joker of the pack and it is his antics that lead the trio to get stuck. With no place else to go they end up holed up in an aprés ski tavern celebrating the end of the skiing season.
Attack of the Lederhosenzombies is also one of those rare examples of films wherein the characters are aware of zombies. Steve instantly recognises the threat as being the reanimated dead and Josh puts a call onto his cousin, who religiously watches zombie films, for pointers.
This is a film in which anything goes, like Sharknado but better. Granted that latter film might give us flying sharks, but this one gives us dancing zombies. Not since Michael Jackson‘s thriller have we seen such moves from the undead. It seems that in this universe music soothes the creatures and there’s a great pro-longed dance sequence.
Very much in the vein of Return of the Living Dead, this is a zombie film that doesn’t take itself too seriously. With a title as wordy and outlandish as this it really couldn’t be anything other than a horror comedy. Well it could be, but that’s a terrible idea. The laughs come in thick and fast from the opening snowy descent and don’t let up until the very end.
The trio, plus the local tavern’s hostess Rita (Margarete Tiesel), have to get creative with their weapons and the film showcases an ingenious way to utilise a snowboard. Rita proves herself to be very adept with what appears to be a grinding or threshing machine, making limbs fly everywhere. With all this carnage you need to see the results, and the make-up and effects work is great, using practical effects to portray a vast variety of zombie related injuries and kills. There’s ski-poles through the eyes, a zombie split in two halves, and a manic deer also affected by the disease.
Kitsch, wacky and gory, Attack of the Lederhosen Zombies is a fun-filled, blood-soaked ski lift ride crammed full of zombies.
Attack of the Lederhosenzombies forms part of this year’s Frightfest programme.
