The first series of Broadchurch took the UK by storm. Telling the story of an investigation into the death of an eleven year old boy, the programme really did grip the nation. Led by two formidable actors, Olivia Colman and David Tennant, the show’s second season was highly anticipated but failed to garner the same fever pitch frenzy as first time around. A third series is still in the works though and it seems that this time around the focus will shift and look into a different crime that will rock the small village of Broadchurch.
We spoke with actress Charlotte Beaumont (Chole Latimer) at this weekend’s Horror Channel Frightfest about what we can expect from the new series. Whilst hesitant at first, she did confirm that this time around the show will be a standalone story and also that it will be set later in time:
The aim is to make it the best one yet and a real standalone piece. You don’t necessarily have to have seen the first two. Obviously my family is in it and you see what happened to them, but it’s set a little later on.
This is great news for newbies as you won’t have to frantically try and catch up before the show airs next year. Similarly, it’s good news for fans that have stayed with the show as it means that the showrunners won’t be dragging out that same original story.
This time around Hardy and Miller will be looking into a sexual assault, although the identity of the victim of this attack has yet to be revealed. Beaumont, who was Frightfest promoting The Windmill Massacre in which she plays the lead, shared her thoughts on the controversial topic of the third season:
I think it’s a really important subject matter to talk about. It’s about sexual assault this time and that’s so romanticised in a lot of things, not everything, but in a lot of things it is. I just think that this will delve into the real effects of that on everyone. It’s hopefully going to be really special, fingers crossed.
An air date for the next season has yet to be announced by ITV, but we can expect it to be sometime in early 2017.
If you can’t wait that long to see Charlotte again, catch her in The Windmill Massacre which is available to download from 26th September, and to buy from 3rd October.
