It debuted at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival before taking a huge bow by opening the London Film Festival just a couple of weeks later, and finally A United Kingdom is released nationwide this coming Friday, 25th November. Ahead of the release, we have two new A United Kingdom clips to share, which you can view below.
The film tells the incredible true story of an interracial marriage that shaped a nation and inspired the world. Starring David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike, the film tells the incredible true story of Seretse Khama, King of Bechuanaland (modern Botswana), and Ruth Williams, the London office worker he married in 1948 in the face of fierce opposition from their families and the British and South African governments.
The first incredibly powerful clip sees Seretse (David Oyelowo) deliver a speech to his tribe after he learns that they feel that he is no longer fit to serve them due to the fact he has chosen a white wife. In a heart-warming scene of acceptance, the second clip shows the local tribeswomen in Bechuanaland celebrating Ruth (Rosamund Pike) in song.
We reviewed the film very positively at TIFF (read our full review here). A United Kingdom stands as a solid, mostly enjoyable and engrossing effort from the highly skilled Amma Asante – one which really highlights the wonder and talent of its amazing cast. While not perfect, it’s a great insight into a remarkable and important true story.
Amma Asante directs the film, which is produced by Rick McCallum (Star Wars), David Oyelowo, Justin Moore-Lewy, Brunson Green (The Help) and Charlie Mason. You can catch it in cinemas from Friday.
