Regular visitors to The Hollywood News will know that we are huge fans of The BFG since we first caught in at Cannes back in May. Well, the film is released on the home market across the UK this week and to co-inside with that, the film’s stars Mark Rylance and Ruby Barnhill came together to celebrate the release at Potter’s Field next to the iconic Tower Bridge in the heart of London.
Passer by were treated to a larger-than-life snow covered landscape, adorned with The BFG’s two giant-sized footprints and equally giant dream-blower trumpet and bag. Symbolising the iconic character created by Britain’s best loved novelist, Roald Dahl, it was as if The BFG had visited London to deliver Phizz-Whizzing dreams to all the good children this Christmas.
The installation itself took five hours to complete, carefully constructing a bed of snow from over 8 cubic metres of both real and artificial snow into which The BFG’s footprints were embedded. Complemented with giant props inspired by the film, this special event was designed to convey the sheer size of this monumental character right here in the heart of London and mark the home entertainment release of The BFG.
The BFG tells the exciting tale of a young girl named Sophie who lives in an orphanage in London. One night, Sophie sees a large, cloaked person in her bedroom window who takes her away to his homeland in Giant Country. There, he identifies himself as the Big Friendly Giant (‘BFG’). Considered an outcast by his fellow children-eating giants, the BFG spends his nights sweeping the streets of London blowing bottled dreams into children’s bedrooms and sustaining himself on a diet of ‘snozzcumbers’ – a foul tasting vegetable substitute to ‘human beans’.
We’ve got a gallery of images to check out from the event below, as well as some video/ You can read our review of the film here. The BFG is out now on Digital Download, Blu-ray™ and DVD.
