Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, John Boyega, Karen Gillan, Patton Oswalt and Bill Paxton star in The Circle, a new drama based on the novel of the same name by Dave Eggers, The teaser trailer for which has just been released online.
The film isn’t coming to cinemas for a little while yet (expect it next April), but we’re intrigued by what we’ve seen so far. Here’s the plot.
As she rises through the ranks of the world’s largest tech and social media company, The Circle, Mae (Watson) is encouraged by company founder Eamon Bailey (Hanks) to live her life with complete transparency. But no one is really safe when everyone is watching.
No much is given away by The Circle teaser trailer, but we’re intrigued. So much so that we may go out an buy the book to ready ourselves. Of course, Hanks appeared in the previous big-screen adaptation of a Dave Eggers book, A Hologram For A King which was released earlier this year. We loved that movie.
If you want a bit more about the plot of The Circle, here’s a bit from the source material.
When Mae is hired to work for the Circle, the world’s most powerful internet company, she feels she’s been given the opportunity of a lifetime. Run out of a sprawling California campus, the Circle links users’ personal emails, social media, and finances with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of transparency. Mae can’t believe her great fortune to work for them – even as life beyond the campus grows distant, even as a strange encounter with a colleague leaves her shaken, even as her role at the Circle becomes increasingly public …
Some of the reviews of the book say that it is actually a funny read as well as ‘big hearted’ and ‘inventive.’ We look forward to reading it, and of course, seeing what writer/ director James Ponsoldt has done with the movie.
