THN’s Golden Globe awards predictions 2017

This weekend, the 74th Golden Globe awards will be dished out in a lavish ceremony in Beverly Hills. This year, taking over hosting duties from Ricky Gervais is The Tonight Show‘s Jimmy Fallon, and it’ll be the usual glitzy affair – probably without all of the near the knuckle jokes – which, frankly we’ll miss as we continue our awards tradition and get hideously drunk as we continue to update the site with who won what.

We’ll be live-blogging on the night but ahead of the ceremony, we thought we’d deliver our winners predictions, and who we THINK will win, and who we’d LIKE to win…

So, here goes, staring with the big ones where we kind of explain our reasons. We’ll be constantly referring to this list as we tweet our way through the evening on Sunday. The fun kicks off at 11pm UK time on Sunday night so make sure you’re hanging around our Twitter page around then…

Here goes.

Best Motion Picture – Drama

Manchester By The Sea

Hacksaw Ridge
Hell Or High Water
Lion
Manchester By The Sea
Moonlight

Who will win? Manchester By The Sea
Who do we want to win? Manchester By The Sea

This one is 50/50. While we really like all of the nominees, particularly Moonlight, which could be its only big rival, we think that the big award will go to Manchester By The Sea. The film has it all – stunning acting, direction, pacing and production design. It leaves the viewer absolutely exhausted with emotion once those final credits roll. We saw the film back in September and are still haunted by its themes – in a good way though. It’s such a memorable cinematic experience. The film is released across the UK on Friday.

Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy

La La Land clips

20th Century Women
Deadpool
Florence Foster Jenkins
La La Land
Sing Street

Who will win? La La Land
Who do we want to win? La La Land

There is no contest here. La La Land has delighted audiences since it debut at the Venice Film Festival back in late August, and then the Toronto Film Festival just a week or so later. That’s where we first saw the film, and our feet haven’t stopped tapping ever since. A story of hope, music, dreams, love and heartbreak. It too opens across the UK next week and we can’t wait to see it again. While we really hope Deadpool snatches it (it won’t), we will be very disappointed if Damien Chazelle’s musical masterpiece doesn’t manage to nab it.

Here’s what we thought of the rest:
