The Devil Wears Prada musical coming: The classic 2006 movie with Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway will head to Broadway in the near future.
The Devil Wears Prada musical on the way! Sir Elton John will team with writer Paul Rudnick for a stage version of the modern classic, which starred Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.
The Devil Wears Prada musical will head to Broadway first, but there is no ETA at the moment.
The film follows Andrea, played by Hathaway in the film, a small-town girl in her first job out of college, who tries to navigate the waters of the high-powered fashion magazine world — while surviving her impossibly demanding new boss, Miranda Priestly (Streep).
Meryl Streep bagged an Oscar nomination for the film, as did Patricia Field for its costume design, which is fitting because of its setting within the fashion industry.
Sir Elton spoke with Deadline as the new broke.
“Re-imagining The Devil Wears Prada for the musical theatre is super exciting. I’m a huge fan of both the book and the feature film and a huge aficionado of the fashion world. I can’t wait to sink my musical teeth into this hunk of popular culture.”
“To bring The Devil Wears Prada to the stage, we knew we needed to find artists as inimitable as the characters in the story,” Bob Cohen of Fox Stage Productions and producer Kevin McCollum said a joint statement. “We needed artists whose work has run the gamut from music and publishing to drama and fashion. We could think of only two names: Elton John and Paul Rudnick. That’s all!”
No news on whether it will transfer to the weekend – it all depends on the success of the Broadway run we suppose, but we’e hopeful.
