Exclusive interview with The Walking Dead’s Katelyn Nacon

This weekend London’s Olympia has been taken over by fans of the undead; the venue is hosting the second ever Walker Stalker Con. The event is an opportunity for fans to meet the cast of the hit show The Walking Dead, and is a lot of fun.

Whilst at the event, we were lucky enough to get a few moments with Katelyn Nacon, who plays Enid. Nacon is an Atlanta native who, alongside acting, also sings. In-between panels she came onto stage and performed a three song set-list; two that she had penned herself, the third a cover of Radiohead’s Creep.

When we met Katelyn she was in high spirits and was clearly very much enjoying the event. Here’s how our meeting went down:

Hi Katelyn, welcome to Walker Stalker London. This is your first London event, how’s it been?

It’s been great. I came in early too, so I got to do some sightseeing on Thursday and Friday. It’s been a lot of fun. I love the place we’re at, it’s gorgeous and everyone is just so nice.

You performed a few songs earlier today, what was that like?

That was so great. I love being able to perform at all the cons because it gets to show people that I sing and write music as well. A lot of people don’t know that, and it’s always fun to see the smiles on their faces when they hear me sing. It’s a really nice feeling.

Your set included a cover of Radiohead’s Creep, why did you pick that song?

Well I’ve sang it for such a time. I feel like the Walker Stalker Con / The Walking Dead has a really creepy atmosphere, and a haunting atmosphere, and I feel that the song kinda fits with that. And everyone always loves it. Whenever I sing it, everyone seems to love it.

We’ve started to see Enid come into her own a little this season, what can we expect from her in the rest of season seven?

Well, as we’ve started to see, she’s starting to open up a lot more to people. She’s starting to create more meaningful relationships with Carl, Maggie and Sasha. It’s really great to see, especially with where she was before. [Back] Then, she wouldn’t let anyone in. We’re hopefully gonna see her get stronger, especially in her relationships with other people.

You had a lot of scenes with Steven [Yeun], how has it been without him?

It’s horrible! I was so excited when I found out that Enid and Glenn would be together. I thought that would be so cool because I thought the characters would mesh really well, and they did. It was very natural working with him. I was really upset when I found out I wouldn’t be able to [work with him] anymore because I felt like I barely got to. He’s such a nice guy.

Now you’re working a lot with Lauren Cohan…

I’m really happy. I’m making my rounds. She’s so nice to work with. Her, Sonequa [Martin-Green], and Tom [Payne], I’ve loved it. I hope I can work with everyone!

If you could write Enid’s demise, how would you want her to go out?

I want it to be like really gruesome! Really bloody – almost like the eye-popping-out that Glenn had. I want like half my face to be ripped off by a walker, something like really gory. I don’t know why. Just something that people will remember, or if I do something like really heroic and I die in a really brave or heroic way. Just so people remember. Something’s that not just ‘oh she got shot, she’s dead.’

We’re loving Winslow the zombie at the moment, which one is your favourite?

The one that really freaked me out, and I couldn’t really handle, was the one in the well. Where his body is split in half. On my gosh, when I watched that I was like ‘okay that was really gross!’ That’s the one thing on the show that actually grossed me out. Usually I just see the special effects make-up side of it, but that one was pretty narly.

You’re also working on another show, what can you tell us about that?

It’s called Tagged in America, but is called You’ve been Tagged here. You can see it on ITV Hub. It’s really funny. It’s really great – these three girls get tagged in this video of someone killing someone. So they start getting harassed physically and mentally, whether it’s through the internet or in person. They kinda go on this crazy adventure to figure out who this person is behind all of it. I just had so much fun filming it. We just did season two which will be coming out pretty soon hopefully. I love it. I play a character called Alicia and she has a lot going on with her, which is always more fun for me the more complex the characters are. It’s definitely something people should check out.

Enid has got by by her motto of ‘just survive somehow’, do you have any kind of motto or mantra?

Not really. Whenever someone asks me what my favourite quote is I tell them what one of my first acting teachers would say. He would say ‘Do your best and forget the rest’. That really helped me getting through all the rejection that comes with acting. It just made me remember that I’m only doing this because I love it. It doesn’t matter if people say I’m not necessarily right for that part, I’m still going to work for this because this is what I love to do.

Catch Katelyn in The Walking Dead which airs on Sundays in the US and Mondays in the UK.
