Well this is unexpected. After a long list of rumoured contenders ranging from Michael Shannon, to Ron Perlman, and even Brad Pitt, the highly coveted role of Cable has been cast in the upcoming sequel to last year’s Deadpool.
After being teased in a hilarious post-credits scene from the original film, Cable will now make his debut next year in the form of Josh Brolin. If this name sounds familiar to Marvel fans, then that’s because he is also the current occupier of another high-profile role, Thanos. Brolin has cameo’d twice in the both Guardians of the Galaxy, and Avengers: Age of Ultron, as the mad titan. But, the character is finally set to make his debut in a starring role with next years Avengers: Infinity War, which is currently filming.
With Brolin’s MCU commitments seemingly occupying his time for the foreseeable future, one has to wonder how this will affect things in the years to come. Sources say that the former Jonah Hex star has nabbed a 4-picture deal with 20th Century Fox. This will easily secure him for at least 2 Deadpool sequels, and undoubtedly the upcoming X-Force too. In the comics Cable is the half-bionic, time-travelling future son of Jean Grey and Scott Summers, which should give ample opportunity for great in-franchise references, and some stunning visuals to boot. Not to mention, the comedic possibilities between himself and his polar opposition that is Wade Wilson.
Deadpool 2 is set to roll before cameras this June in Vancouver, with Ryan Reynolds reprising his iconic role, and Zazie Beetz joining him as Domino. David Leitch (John Wick) will take over as director from Tim Miller, and the film is rumoured to debut on March 2nd next year. 2018 is going to be a busy year for Brolin.
