Deadwood movie script turned in over at HBO. Will we finally get a film version of the classic TV show?

The Deadwood movie has been in development for many years though now we’re hearing news that the script for the film has now been delivered to HBO for their perusal. The news comes from one of the stars of the original series, which ran for three seasons from 2004 to 2006. Ian McShane, who played foul-mouthed Al Swearengen, owner of The Gem Saloon on the show, had the following to say in a recent interview with TV Line:
“[A] two-hour movie script has been delivered to HBO. If they don’t deliver [a finished product], blame them.”
Deadwood was set in a mining town that was not part of any U.S. state or territory in the post-Civil War years, and thus was literally lawless. Deadwood attracts people looking to get rich after a huge gold strike, as well as those looking to capitalize on the lack of organized law in the town, built on land stolen from the Sioux.
Speculation on a Deadwood movie has been rife ever since the show ended over ten years ago, but it was confirmed very recently that a film version was being written by creator and writer David Milch. It sounds like most of the cast are up for a return, something that McShane confirmed in the same interview.
“I’ll be seeing [Milch] for lunch [soon]. We’d all love to do it… It would be nice to see all of the old gang again,” he said.
McShane is currently appearing in American Gods, the new Starz series that focusses on an ex-convict who becomes the bodyguard of a powerful old deity looking to reclaim his lost glory. The show, developed by Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, is based on the book of the same name by Neil Gaiman. It airs on the network on April 30th.
