*Not actually THE Bryan Cranston and James Franco, sadly.
A Tuesday evening and THN have been summoned to the Bloomsbury Bowling complex in London Town for an evening of high-jinks. We’re here to celebrate the release of Why Him?, a funny new movie starring James Franco and Bryan Cranston, which has just arrived on DVD and Blu-ray.
Why Him? follows Bryan Cranston and James Franco’s characters, Ned and Laird, who fight the ultimate battle of wits and wills in this outrageous, no-holds-barred comedy. Ned (Bryan Cranston), an overprotective but loving dad, and his family visit his daughter at college, where he meets his biggest nightmare: her well-meaning but socially awkward Silicon Valley billionaire boyfriend, Laird (James Franco). A rivalry develops, and Ned’s panic level goes through the roof when he finds himself lost in this glamorous high-tech world and learns that Laird is about to pop the question.
What does this have to do with bowling? Who cares, there’s a bar here.
Oh, I suppose there is a little nod to the game in the film though…
Tonight, we’re attempting to be Bryan Cranston’s level of awesome.
Bloomsbury Bowling is actually a pretty awesome establishment which houses the amazing Kingpin Suite, a number of rooms dedicated to the art of ten-pin bowling, a game we’ve often attempted to play, but obviously never mastered. The order of service is to neck a number of beers before taking to the alleys, something we are indeed experts at.
That bucket didn’t last long.
See?
So, we’re off and running with Team THN taking on one another. We manage a few strikes and spares during our ten attempts and spend a considerable amount of time trying to work out just how the fancy computer counts up your score if you manage to knock all the pins down. Does anyone know?
It’s all good fun though, and in the true spirit of Why Him?, we constantly argue throughout our one-game challenge. Of course, this bickering continues and it’s not long until we are challenged in the bar area to a bout of table tennis/ pong. Clearly a little worse for wear, I sit this one out and allow my fellow THN-ers to fly the flag.
Of course, we won.
The night moves on again and we find ourselves in one of the many karaoke suites. This being my area of expertise, we whack on a couple of Backstreet Boys tracks before belting a few Oasis numbers out of the Kingpin Suite’s PA system. Our bucket of beer is long depleted, but its effects are in full flow as is the ‘music’. Our performance continues long into the night until the point in which we notice we are, yet again, the last ones standing and the entire venue empty…
We do, however, decide to polish off with one last beer back at my place, and a late night screening of Why Him? It really is a funny movie, so do check it out.
WHY HIM? IS AVAILABLE ON BLU-RAY AND DVD FROM 1ST MAY COURTESY OF TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT.
