Tom Cruise is out and about promoting The Mummy at the moment, a film that will land in cinemas next week, and of course the subject of the in-development Top Gun 2 came up. The guys from Access Hollywood caught up with the screen legend and promptly dug a little on the planned follow-up to Cruise’s break-out role in the 1986 movie, and the man offered up the title of the film – Top Gun Maverick.

“We’re gonna have the same tone we had from the first one, really,” Cruise told the outlet. “Stylistically, it’s going to be the same. We’re going to have the same score from Harold Faltermeyer… Aviators are back. The need for speed. We’re going to have big, fast machines.”
The screen icon added a little more information regarding the tone of the film. He says “it’s going to be a competition film like the first one, and it’s going to be in the same vein and the same tone as the first,” while also being “a progression for Maverick.”
Sounds great. We’re already in Tom. Definitely there.
Another person who is lobbying for a part in the film is Val Kilmer, the guy that played the role of Iceman in Tony Scott’s belting original.
“I’m ready Tom – still got my top gun plaque,” Kilmer wrote on his Instagram page. “Still got the moves! Still got it!”

He is even wearing an Iceman t-shirt.
There’s no news on when Top Gun Maverick will release in cinemas – there still isn’t a director attached, though Joseph Kosinski, who directed Cruise in Oblivion, is the frontrunner at the moment. Shooting is set to start within the year, according to Cruise, so keep your eyes to the skies.
We’ll bring you more news as we get it, but here’s the interview from AH.
