The forthcoming Transformers spin-off Bumblebee is to be set in the 1980s, so reports Empire magazine in the UK. The film will bow in cinemas in 2018 courtesy of Kubo and the Two Strings director Travis Knight, and will be the first Transformers-related movie not to be directed by Michael Bay. This news from Empire confirms that the film will indeed be a prequel.
Transformers spin-off will be set in the 1980s
The magazine has more:
A Bumblebee spin-off, conceived and written by Christina Hodson, is being directed by Kubo And The Two Strings’ Travis Knight for a 2018 release. Set in the 1980s, it will feature considerably fewer Transformers, concentrating on the big, yellow star (who in the movies so far can only talk via snippets of radio broadcasts) and likely pitching a little younger, tonally.
Hailee Steinfeld (Edge Of Seventeen) will lead the cast of the film, which kicks into production very soon.
Of course, we have the latest film in the Transformers franchise due before then. Transformers: The Last Knight explodes into cinemas later this month, Michael Bay directing the fifth high-octane adventure. One of the film’s cast also spoke with the magazine about his role and the plot.
“You’re not going to ask me to explain the plot are you? Because it’s so very complicated and there’s the whole mythology of four previous films that come into play. I have to admit, I don’t quite get all of it,” Hopkins said.
“All I know is I play a highly educated, eccentric English lord. I had a terrific time making it. Mark Wahlberg was wonderful to work with, the locations were excellent (Northumberland, Norway, Arizona, the Isle of Skye and Stonehenge) and I showed up, put my costume on, said my lines and stayed out of trouble. That’s all I ever do. It beats working for a living.”
Transformers: The Last Knight opens in cinemas on 23rd June, 2017, and of course we’ll have a full review as the release date approaches. More on Bumblebee, the Transformers spin-off, as it comes our way too.
