Despicable Me 3 review
This is the third film in the franchise produce by Illumination Entertainment and released by Universal Studios, a sometimes entertaining comedy adveture containing those loveable yellow Minions. The film opens with Balthazar Bratt – Trey Parker as a 1980’s child star super villain trying to steal an oversized pink diamond. The two engage in a very entertaining dance fight with Gru (Steve Carell) who manages to retrieve the diamond but does not capture the dastardly Bratt.
Gru and his new wife Lucy (Kristen Wiig) lose their jobs at the Anti Villains League due to their failure to capture Bratt again. Most of Gru’s Minions leave him when he will not take up villainy and Lucy stuggles with being a mum to their 3 adoptive daughters. Gru then discovers that he has a twin brother Dru (Carell) and the family decided to meet him.
Despicable Me 3 review
Dru charms the family and they are impressed at his wealth, meanwhile the Minions crash a talent show and are imprisoned. Bratt manages to steal the pink diamond and wants to use it to destroy Hollywood as revenge. Whilst Lucy spends time with her daughters and starts to enjoy being a mum, Dru reveals that their father was a super villain and would like Grus help in teaching him how to be a villain. When Gru finds out that Bratt has stolen the diamond again he and Dru secretly set out to recover it. They steal the diamond back from Bratt and fall out over returning the diamond to the AVL. Bratt infiltrates Drus mansion and kidnaps the daughters and the diamond. Lucy, Gru and Dru work together to rescue the girls. The Minions escape prison and help destroy Bratts’ gum which is taking over Hollywood.
The film finishes with Dru and the minions stealing Grus car as villainy is a family business. Lucy and Gru give them a 5 minute head start, so there is opportunity for a 4th film.
Despicable Me 3 review
The film is rather light on Minions and lacks a coherent, gripping storyline which could be a disappointment for some fans. It has strong themes of familial love and goodness running through it and my children absolutely loved it, and, ass we left the cinema, I was asked when they can see it again, so to be recommended for fans of the franchise, but as an adult it was a little disappointing.
