Rising star Maika Monroe is set to join Isabelle Huppert and Chloë Grace Moretz in Oscar winning director Neil Jordan’s upcoming thriller The Widow from Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, a division of SK Global, it was announced by SKE President John Penotti.
The Widow is currently in pre-production and will be directed by Jordan (The Crying Game) from a screenplay penned by Ray Wright (The Crazies). The New York-set thriller follows a young woman named Frances (Moretz) who strikes up an unlikely friendship with an older widow named Greta (Huppert) whose intentions soon turn sinister. Monroe will play Erica, the savvy roommate and best friend to Frances.
Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, Lawrence Bender (Hacksaw Ridge, Pulp Fiction), James Flynn (P.S. I Love You), and Karen Richards (Penny Dreadful) are producing the project. Sierra/Affinity will represent foreign sales, and CAA and WME Global will co-represent the film domestically.
Maika Monroe’s recent credits include the breakout indie horror film It Follows and Twentieth Century Fox’s international box office hit Independence Day: Resurgence alongside Liam Hemsworth and Jeff Goldblum. In 2016, Monroe was featured in The Hollywood Reporter’s list of Rising Stars Under 35 along with Tye Sheridan (Ready Player One) and Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver).
Sidney Kimmel Entertainment’s recent production of Hell or High Water (with OddLot Entertainment) received four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. The Company’s next theatrical release is Brad’s Status, written and directed by Mike White (School of Rock) and starring Ben Stiller, Michael Sheen, Luke Wilson, and Jenna Fischer. The film, produced with Plan B, will be distributed Stateside September 15 by Amazon Studios and thereafter internationally by Sierra/Affinity.
