John Boyega On Princess Leia’s Fate In ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’

He’s out and about on the promotional trail for true story drama Detroit, but of course everyone is asking John Boyega about the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Peter Travers caught up with Boyega on Popcorn Talk Stateside and asked him about the late Carrie Fisher’s involvement in the next instalment of the Star Wars saga, and the fate of her character Princess Leia.

Here’s what he had to say:

“We have many scenes in [Episode] 8, in this one coming up,” Boyega said. “[But] this movie, it sends her off in a very amazing, amazing way. She’s still kept alive in this franchise and that’s the beauty of it. She lives forever, in a sense.”

Boyega also touched upon Fisher’s death and how he learned of her passing shortly after Christmas last year.

“It was amazing. I mean, you get to know someone, and the gloss and the glamour of the person starts to go away and you just see the person and have a great time. We really enjoyed each other’s company. I was in Nigeria when we found out [about her death] with family. It was a strange, strange feeling. I felt like everyone in the cast went silent for a bit after that.”

You can watch the entire interview with Boyega, where he also goes into his outstanding work on Detroit, which is released in the UK on August 18th, in the player below. Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives in December from Lucasfilm.
