Entertainment Weekly has released the first four official images from upcoming sequel Pacific Rim Uprising. John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Adria Arjona, Jing Tian, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman are amongst the cast of the big-budget film, which arrives in cinemas next year.
Boyega spoke to the outlet about his role of Jake Pentecost, son of Stacker Pentecost, Idris Elba’s character from the 2013 original.
“Jake is the prodigal son,” Boyega told EW. “He is a young guy who was on the cusp of greatness in his early days when he was training to be a Jaeger pilot, but he always had a troubled relationship with Stacker. I’m the son he didn’t really talk about in the first film … the product of Stacker’s first love.”
Stacker and Jake reportedly fell out “because of Stacker’s attention and hope and faith in Mako rather than him.”

Pacific Rim Uprising is directed by Steven S. DeKnight and written by DeKnight, Emily Carmichael, Kira Snyder, and T.S. Nowlin from a story by DeKnight and Nowlin.
