Weta Workshop has released an interesting new video over on YouTube showing off some pretty amazing work on this year’s Blade Runner 2049. The featurette focusses in on the amazing miniature models used in the film and shows how they were used to bring this amazing vision to the screen.
Weta contributed practical miniatures, selected cinematography, and concept design work to Blade Runner 2049, which was of course directed by Denis Villeneuve.
The description for the video reads:
This was a passion project for our crew, who are huge fans of Ridley Scott’s iconic 1982 original. Here in Wellington, NZ, we hand-made enormous miniature sets which were then filmed by legendary cinematographer Alex Funke. In the Design Studio, our team of conceptual designers helped give shape to the director’s vision.
It’s a really interesting feature to watch, particularly for fans of the movie, which was received very well universally, though sadly didn’t exactly set the box-office alive, taking around $240 million from a $150 million budget.
In the film, Officer K (Ryan Gosling), a new blade runner for the Los Angeles Police Department, unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. His discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former blade runner who’s been missing for 30 years.
