David Ayer Talks Directing Post-‘Suicide Squad’

It’s safe to say that Suicide Squad split audiences last year. I probably fell into the more positive camp, liking it more than some, and while I haven’t seen David Ayer’s next movie Bright as yet, I hear there are very mixed reviews too. Well, the filmmaker, who has quite the impressive back-catalog with the likes of Training Day on his writer’s resume, and then End Of Watch and Fury as a director, has been speaking about getting back into filming after all of those negative reviews for his DC villains movie.

“It was sh*t. Yeah, it was sh*t reviews. I got my throat cut,” Ayer laughed in an interview with ET Online. “It was a super polarizing movie. Incredibly polarizing.”

He spoke about dusting himself off and getting back into the ring for another big-budget sci-fi, the Netflix movie Bright.

“It’s like going to the boxing ring and getting knocked out is how it felt. And I had to go into the ring again. And directing is a confidence game because you’re selling everyone on something that only exists in your head. The actors have to feel that confidence to trust that you know what you’re doing, and so does your crew. As a director, you set the tone. Really, it’s coming off that movie, I understood the pitfalls, I understood the dangers, I knew where the alligators hide, you know? And so I made damn sure I didn’t repeat any mistakes.”

Bright hit Netflix yesterday. Read Awais Irfan’s review for THN over here.
